Every year, my truck pick would change. For 2013 when I was shopping for trucks, the RAM had the most solid chassis and an engine I was confident in servicing myself. Wife preferred the aesthetics and ergonomics of the RAM over the Ford. GM wasn't competitive in that year in my book. RAM was the only one with an exhaust brake feature that actually worked well.
With 2015 here, I would have to test drive all 3 all over again. Ford has bulked up their motor, GM has revised their HD truck (though I have an issue with the lack of rear seat vents on a 6 seat truck). RAM decided to play the king-of-torque game buy tacking on another 15 lb-ft of torque over Ford's rating. All 3 now sport an exhaust braking system.
The priorities for me and questions I asked myself were:
1. Can I actually do the typical service on this vehicle myself?
2. Can I do any major service myself?
3. Is the cabin comfortable for long-distance driving?
4. How are the site-line? Do I have good visibility out of the cab? Cameras and such for backing and parking? etc...
5. Does it have the features I want/need such as seat warmers? Mirror setup? etc...
6. Can I live with this vehicle? Would I be happy living with this vehicle?
7. Any major issues trending on the interwebs for a vehicle?
8. What's the bottom dollar price I can get for each vehicle.
These are the major questions I answer with every car purchase.
As for the whole "American-ess" of a vehicle, that question is answered by the parts content sticker posted on each vehicle. If you go HD though, this sticker isn't required (unfortunately). However, maybe the LD stickers can play as an indicator... so for the LD players, here's their stickers (Pulled from NHTSA's website) (In Alphabetical order):
Chevy/GMC Silverado/Sierra 1500 - 45% US, 52% Mexico. Engines are from the US. Transmissions are from the US. Final Assembly in the US or Mexico
Ford F-150 - 65% US. 3.5 and 2.7 motors from US, 5.0 motor from Canada. Transmissions all from the US. Final Assembly in the US
Nissan Titan - 50% US, 15% Japanese. 5.6 motor from the US. Transmissions all from Japan. Final Assembly in the US
RAM 1500 - 61% US, 23% Mexico. 3.6's come from Mexico or US, 5.7L motors come from Mexico, 3.0 Diesel from Italy. Transmissions are made in the US or Germany. Final Assembly in the US and Mexico
Toyota Tundra - 70% US, 15% Japanese. All Engines are US. All transmissions are US. Final Assembly in the US.
All figures are for 2015 production. I wish these stickers were required for HD trucks.
