The engine in our '09 F250 (V10) just exploded yesterday while away on a long road trip. By the grace of god, it died about 5 minutes from my BIL's house in Vernon BC after we traveled way up past Jasper to near Edmonton. Could have happened in the middle of nowhere. :EThrough BIL's connections, we've found a very nice '12 GMC 2500 but it has 17" wheels. Our F250 had new-ish 18" Michelins on it but can't swap them over.Will 17" tires have enough load capacity? Our TT is 7K lbs with a 950 lb TW. The tires on the GMC are off-road looking type and I don't mind replacing them anyway (except for having to spend even more $$). I'd really hate to have to buy new rims too though.Last two trucks have been Ford and GMC is new to me. The price is waaay to good to pass up and the seller is taking our old F250 off our hands so we don't have to figure out how to dispose of it. The plan is to get the new truck to drive the rest of the way home. Our TT is getting towed home by BIL's friend for cheap.Gotta get a new truck pdq because we're heading out in a couple of weeks for our annual extended trip and have all the CGs booked in Oregon & Washington.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know the load rating on the GMC or our F250 and will have to check tomorrow. The tire load capacity only just occurred to me this evening.

I doubt you will have issues, especially at that weight. Check to be sure of course but I would not worry if you had 16". It is easy to find take off 18" rims and tires as many ditch OEM for aftermarket if you wanted to upgrade later.

I'm sure that you can get 17" that will do the job. The off-road tires on there now may not be a good thing. I use Tire Rack to look up specifications and compare the choices.Now just what the heck did you do to the V10?

My older Chevy 1500hd is running 16" tires pulling my 8k TT with similar tongue weight .My truck's GVW is 8,600# which gives me 2,800# payload. GM 2500(non hd) at those vintage was 600# higher. I'd bet the newer 2500 has equal or better GVW.BTW, where are you camping in OR. I'm going to Bend and Portland next week and might run into you in OR. You'd never know.

Load range on the tires is what matters, not the diameter.

I have E range 17"s and had E range 16"s before that.

Either set of tires would hold more than my truck could.

As long as they are the stock wheels there is absolutely no problem. Any 2500/250 will have approximately the same load rating. Your only worries would be if the previous owner replaced the tires with something with less capacity than stock.

I pull a 5er that is rated for double your travel trailer with a truck equipped with 17" wheels. There are even 1/2 tons that come with P-metric tires that are equipped to pull your trailer within their ratings. As long as the 2500 has LT rated tires in an appropriate size and in good condition, they will be fine and even have quite a bit of excess capacity at max pressure. Look at the sidewall--they should be rated for 3195 @ 80 psi single.

Wheel size has little to do with weight capacity. I have a one ton Ford with factory 16 inch wheels and no problems.

It's likely that the load rating on the tires exceeds the load rating on the rear axle. I wouldn't worry.
