Advantage of a MPPT over PWM increases as the voltage of the panel increases.
If you have 100 Watt panel that operates at 17.6V, the most current you will see is (100/17.6) 5.68A with a PWM. However, a MPPT controller can get you (100/14.2) 7.04A.
It isn't about the cost efficiency of a MPPT controller, but that you can do more with less real estate which is a premium on a TC.
Note: Calculations based on 100% efficiency for controllers and a 14.2V charge voltage.
