Well, we have an existence proof (Art's) that you could be wrong about them, and I gather you have no experience with them in this application yourself. I'd like to see more people try them and report their experience here.
Another possible explanation of why they might work: by adding vorticity to the air entering the narrow slot between cab and camper, the effect of skin friction would be greatly increased (the boundary layer much thickened) which could very effectively slow the air flow hitting the camper front wall. I note that the clearance on Art's rig is minimal, which would help with this effect.
