Wind mill power

Just wondering if anyone uses a wind turbine to charge your Batteries? Most of the time when We're using the camper we are on the beach most of the time 2 day in a row there is usually a good breeze going I think it would be more useful than solor seeing that the sun isn't always out but there is always wind on the ocean
  • Have seen lot of those on boats around Catalina, but I would not like to camp in area where you can use them.
  • Problem is they make a lot of noise where as solar is quiet. Another issue is the problem of storing the unit when not in use.

But yes, you could put one on a short pole above the camber and get a lot of juice from even a small one.

The beaches and a few mountain area updrafts is about the only place you can get a sustained 5-7mph wind to run the big blade type turbines....

The only kind I would even think about being mounted on top of a RV would be the Vertical Axis Wind Turbine... I read about one that looked like the heat wind fans on house roofs made for RV's and was looking for it on-line but never come up with it...

    Looked something like this unit...

Being a vertical type you would have the generator down inside the RV somewhere driven by a long shaft... They make magnetic type bearings that have almost zero resistance for turning shafts. You can turn a shaft using a couple of these type bearings with your hand and it will turn for days haha...

The blade type turbines are very noisy and a hugh eye sore...

    x2

Around here... If there's enough wind to make power, there's too much to drop my awning.
  • I'm going to put solar in first, I had it in the old camper and it worked fine

I wonder if the turbine is louder than a flag blowing in the wind

    thanks for the reply's
  • Living in the high desert, we have at least a 5-7 mph wind constantly. But also have a 25-60 mph gusts every day too!
Don't think I would want to have my camper become a not very aerodynamic airplane!
  • We used a "Wind Bugger" when we lived aboard in the Caribbean, with a 15+ knot wind speed it was very effective. However it was noisy! Solar required constant wiping to remove salt spray which quickly reduced the output. I find the solar ideal for our TC and have seen a few small wind turbines on beach rigs used mostly to power small medical gear. To get the kind of power we need in our TC I think the noise level and steady wind speeds of 15+knots (Pretty much the minimum required) limits wind powers practicality. Prolly technology will over come these short comings, eventually, so that a combo of solar and wind will be useful.
