Time to come out Of the stone age and replace that fuse panel then you won't have wiring issues like subpanels and 50 amp fuses.
I would tend to agree with this position, fuse boxes did serve a purpose eons ago but in modern days fuse boxes are rather obsolete when compared to the convenience of breakers.
But there are reasons as to why one would not change to a breaker panel.. If one was renting then it would be the land lords problem.. So it may not be feasable for the OP to undertake this.
Cost can be a factor, changing out the fuse box is not cheap, materials and labor do add up.
But there are some distinct advantages of upgrading the service entrance to breakers..
You can upgrade the service entrance to 150, 175 or 200A.. Gives more room for expansion and with modern day electronics and more appliances you now have plenty of power to run them.
Replacing my 60A fuse box and service entrance was the very first update I made to my home when I bought it, I went to a 200A box and service. Very glad I did, since I now have a garage with a welder, compressor and other power hungry tools..
