Wiring for '97 Northstar Pop-Up Slide-in

Hello,

I have some questions about the wiring on my slide-in camper. Since I'm new to the camper game and the wiring looks like its been hacked into a bit, I wanted to check if what I have is normal and, if not, what I need to do to make the system legal. When I bought the camper, I was told that the exterior lights "need some work." After some digging, here's what I've got. There are 4 wires going into the camper from the truck umbilical. Two of these are larger guage and go to the AC/DC converter (black and white), which seems fine. Of the other two, one goes to the running lights and the other to the positive terminal on the 3-way fridge. The running lights are all wired together in parallel with a conductor to ground to complete the circuit, so no turning indicators. This seems unusual to any standard wiring set-up I've read about online. Do I need turn indicators on the camper? Where do I connect these conductors on a standard 6-pin receptacle on my truck? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

  • If the rear of the camper obscures your normal tail lights, you need functional stop and turn signals on the camper. The camper will have its own tail and backup lights, and a place to hang a license plate if this is the case. On yours they will need to be completely rewired, if you have them.

There are plenty of online references for the wiring of standard trailer plugs.

A small 12V battery or jumper pack will help you probe each wire to see what function it performs.
