Bottom line is that GM sold 642,250 total new vehicles in the first three months of 2021 vs 715,794 vehicles in the U.S. during the first quarter of 2018, a decline of 10% over 3 years. Not exactly a huge success story. Yes, they sold everything that they could build but that wasn't nearly enough.

Do we really need to look up the numbers for Tesla and Hyundai/Kia?

I am not anti GM but I am deeply disappointed by them. I remember when GM had half of the US market and made the vast majority of them here, employing hundreds of thousands of people and contributing immense amounts of wealth to the American economy. Likewise, Ford had half of the remaining market share, or 25% and Chrysler had half of what was left after that, or 12%. The foreign brands fought over the remaining 1/8 of the market.

You can blame people infatuated with Tesla technology for running the price up but do you have an explanation for why GM stock is up 50% since 20% even though sales are down 10%? It appears to me that most of then increase, if fact GM has nearly tripled in the past year, has come since GM announced that they were going to enter the markets that they had ceded to Tesla.

Just in from business news. The administration is holding a summit among industries to address the chip shortage.

Inclluded in the meeting is GM's CEO. And the national security -- meaning, it's being seen as a matter of national security and therefore most urgent.

But whatever they may come up with, this is a capital investment that would call for building manufacturing facilities, production capacities, etc.

And yes, there is no ifs and buts that this must be addressed and I'm happy that the administration see this also a need to be done domestically -- as we also realized when Chinese and Asian sources of our critical raw materials and sub-compomments shut-down due to Covid..

Personally I have not lost one single day of work nor did I work from home. In fact I changed jobs, actually careers going into another business, at a substantial salary increase.

Easy to do when the gubmint pays folks to not work at a rate that is substantially above what they made before, evenn if they did not work before. Free money, free rent or mortgage payments, etc. Now they don't want to work. Probably why I stood in line at Lowes this morning at the one open checkout for 30 minutes to buy 10 bags of mulch.

Guess you haven't been to a Lowes or Home Depot on a weekend when the weathers nice out. Every DIY guy and his family are out shopping. It's common knowledge in my family between me and my older two sons that you don't go to HD or Lowes on the weekend.

It's been like that well before Covid.

During the week it's all the guys with remodel businesses which is booming.

I try and avoid Lowes whenever possible. They never have more than one checkout open inside, and no self service checkouts. True, they sucked before Covid.

Now its worse as every one I see has help wanted signs out. When you can get more money for free for sitting at home on your ass than working, why work?

It's simple, car sales are going through the roof. People like me are working from home, cutting daily travel expenses down to nothing. Govt bonus money isn't hurting either. Combine with limited parts, aka chip shortage, you have a perfect storm affecting OEM sales.

Ford and GM both have reported expected 2B drop in revenue. That's going to hit the bottom line pretty hard.

WW2 ended in Europe Sept. 2, 1945 and good 12 years from start of FDR's presidency -- and considering economic cycles on those days run from 3 to 5 years.
