Xterra pro 4X towing abilities

My husband and I are looking into purchasing a travel trailer. We know that our 2011 Nissan xterra pro 4X can pull about 5,000 lbs but at what length trailer should we not exceed?

Or weight capacity?

If anyone has any suggestions or EXPERIENCES with towing a trailer via xterra please let us know. Thank you

  • We've towed a Wolf Pup and now an Rpod with a Jeep Wrangler 4 door. Somewhat similar comparison. No problems with either and both using a weight distributing hitch and brake controller.
  • I towed my trailer for the first year with a small SUV like your Nissan. It worked but the SUV was not happy with it on anything but flat land.

It's not at all about weight, it's about frontal area. Lightweight frame and drivetrain components to match... Just too much work to pull a full size trailer, even a small one.

DownTheAvenue has it spot on, imho
  • “but at what length trailer”

Wheelbase for your vehicle is 106.3. The general rule is 20 feet of trailer for 110 inches of wheelbase. And then another foot of TT for every additional four inches. So, 19 feet or less. And get over the “pull” number. Think payload, axel weight, rear end ratio etc.
  • While not with an Xterra, we towed with a similar sized SUV for years. Tow rating was just over 5k, and the trailer was 3500 loaded. It towed the lightweight trailer with ease, bu I wouldn't go anywhere the 5k tow rating.

Hardly. :( With a tow vehicle like yours you'd be wise to restrict yourselves to a trailer with a UVW of 3000 lbs or less.
  • Tow ratings are for a perfect world. Your SUV needs a factory tow package.

Watch your payload, hitch weight and frontal sq ft area of the TT you plan to buy.

I towed boats using an X and I would not like to tow more than 3500# of real weight. Real rolling down the road weight....NOT a posted dry weight from a manufacturer.

Research TT's in the 3000-3500# range. Pick a floorplan that you think would work for you and RENT the trailer before you buy one.
