Yellowstone / Teton Alternative Camping Recommendations

We are planning on heading up to the Yellowstone / Teton area in mid-June and as of right now it appears that all of the 1700+ reservable campsites in Yellowstone are reserved. That said, I know the remaining campgrounds in Yellowstone and the Teton's are first come first serve, but if we get there and they are all full does anyone have any recommendations on places close to either park to stay? In my brief search I located Henry's Lake State Park in ID, which we are considering staying at initially unless someone has a better recommendation? Thank you in advance!

Since you have a TC, coming from the Tetons to Yellowstone there is a CG, I don't remember the name soon after you get into the Park that would suit you, no big rigs. Also near Flagg Ranch there is some primitive spots along the river.

In West I usually stay at Campfire Lodge and Resort, on the Madison. There are also some FS Cg's near by. Also in a pinch and depending where your heading there are several BLM CG's along the Madison. If you head toward Bozeman there a several FS CG's on that roadway.

Narcodog, I'd forgotten. Lewis Lake is the CG you're talking about. I'd forgotten about Flagg Ranch, now called something else, but if you take Grassy Lake Rd, there are several free campgrounds, with pit toilets, along the Snake River. We drove back to check them out and had a picnic there, but our 5th couldn't get in and turned around if anyone else was there.
  • We are thinking of staying at Henry's Lake as we won't be arriving until Sat at which time we figure all first serve campgrounds in the park and surrounding areas will be taken. We'll stay at Henry's Lake for a couple days and then see if something opens up in either Yellowstone or Teton on Monday. We have access passes so coming and going from park isn't an issue. We are considering heading down towards Signal Mountain on Tuesday of that next week....would love to hear any thoughts on Henry's Lake or Signal Mountain. Thanks for all the input as well...we will swing by and check out Baker's Hole as well.

  • Having visited many times, Colter Bay RV and Colter Bay CG (the dry camping part), Grizzly RV, and Baker's Hole, are all great options. As far as Bakers Hole, it is our favorite - great spot even for big rigs. We've been fortunate enough to snag a spot driving straight in twice, another not. So, what we did, was stay over at Grizzly RV and early the next morning, we drove over to Baker's Hole, spoke to the hosts as far as which sites were coming open and then drove through and if a site didn't renew, we put our pay envelope on the site and paid for it, then after it cleared, we went back to Grizzly, hooked up and drove over to Baker's Hole. Any FS CG with first come first serve sites, we always stop and talk to the hosts first. It's the best lesson we've learned in getting a spot. Another spot we've stayed at is Red Rock RV - out by Henry's Lake. Super nice RV park. We've also stayed at the KOA West of West Yellowstone. A nice place, but spendier than Red Rock. Another couple of years, we stayed even further out off of the Togwotee Pass between Moose and Dubois, Wyoming at a FS CG called Falls. Two loops with lots of spacious sites for big rigs and one loop has electricity. Staying at either Henry's Lake, Red Rock, or at Falls means that you'll have a drive in, but if you don't mind, these campgrounds are worth it.
  • X2 on Grizzly. Of course, it is outside the park but my Golden Age card let me in for free.

Get there mid-day on a weekday if you want to snag an electric spot. It will be full on weekends.

  • If you don't need hook ups, Gros Ventre campground in the Tetons rarely fills up. Also, the Colter Bay campground seldom fills according to the website.
  • Grizzly RV Park in West Yellowstone is an exceptional park. Fun, small town to wander thru.
