Yes I did it, 2015 F-150 and 35 foot TT

This post is strictly for those who are looking for real life experiences towing big trailers with a half ton truck. I have seen several topics that seem to be asking for these experiences but all you get is people breaking down your numbers for you on paper. I bought the sprinter last week and we pulled it home with the F-150, all highway. It did well IMO, you could feel the semis when you were around them. But also after talking to my dad who pulls the same size TT with his F-350, he confirmed that semis pushed and pulled him as well which didn't surprise me. So this past weekend we took the camper on its maiden voyage. I did roughly 5 hours of pulling, some large freeway with semis all around, but probably 75% of the driving was state highways, 55 mph speed limit. Those kind of roads. I thought the truck did excellent handling the trailer. Even when around the semis I seemed to notice them much less than when we pulled it home from the dealer. Yes my fuel mileage was ****py at 8 mpg. But what do you honestly expect with a v-6 twin turbo under a load. I lock the truck out of 6th to avoid alot of shifting and did the whole trip in mainly 4th and 5th. The truck is so smooth and powerful IMO and I love it. So what it boils down too is yes, that is a massive trailer for a 1/2 ton truck. Yes it handled it great in my eyes. Would I want the same setup pulling through the rockies or other large mountains, no probably not. Its all about what you intend to do with it your setup. You're going to have some sway with a TT this long, its a massive sail catching alot of wind. Take it easy and take your time. As anyone should do pulling a trailer of any size I think. I just really wanted to share my experience with others out there wanting the same kind of setup.

*my blue ox WDH barely put me over my payload by my calculations.

    3oaks, exactly what I was trying to accomplish.

    As for the F-350, yes I am sure it would handle it better. But I'm making due with what I have


    Your Dad should have advised you against your combo. His truck has a lot more meat on the table to control that huge tail!

    At a minimum I would highly advise getting some stiffer sidewall tires.

    A little incorrect on the 3000+ lbs of payload. You linked the max camper load. Which from most manufactures, you need to add in the number of seat belt times 150 lbs to the max camper load to get actual "payload"!

    Taking the highest camper load at 2800 lbs for a reg cab 4x4, plus 3 people at 450 lbs equals 3250 lbs of total payload. So 50 lbs shy of the max listed....Close enough for my rear end any how! If ford is not using 150 lbs per person, but say 160-170, we would be in the 3300 lbs ball game.

    One has to know which numbers to look at, and how they add up etc.

    Similar to the previous poster, we tow an 32' Open Range LT274RLS. Trucks sticker payload is 2090. My Sherline scale shows typically between 1050 and 1100 lbs. on the hitch. If I'm getting close to the 1150 hitch limit, I just move some things to the pickup bed. Very nice to have enough payload to have that option. We've only had the new TT since January, but have been to the Smokies - absolutely no problem. On highway, I actually seem more stable with the push/pull from trucks than I did with smaller trailer but that could be the equalizer over the E2 I had. Cross winds are noticeable. My wife has no problem driving and together we have knocked out the 600 miles to Disney in one day. Never drive over 60, but never did with the other trailer either. Would or could a 350 do better, possibly, but I ordered this truck knowing exactly what I wanted and that I may tow somewhat larger in the future(at the time only had a 24' TT). A properly equipped F150 is fully capable of comfortably towing up to 35' if it's got the payload and hitch, driver has much to do with success and keeping speed reasonable probably more.

    You sound like us - 2011 F150 EB, Max Tow, 35' Open Range LT272RLS. According to those here, we're both rolling deathtraps. Yet, I bet few have actually done it.

    Our combination works very well, just like yours. Been in the "mountains" of PA, no issues up and down. Been on the highway and yes we do get blown around at times but so was the 18 wheeler in front of me. Either I'm an idiot or something but we really don't get blown around by passing semis. You feel it but from what I read it's the same in just about all configurations.

    About the only issue I have is some porpoising on certain stretches of highway. I'm thinking airbags to fix that.

    Sure, we may upgrade to something bigger when I get tired of the F150 but for now it works well for us. I could dig a hole for a small tree in the back yard with a backhoe or a shovel. Both are appropriate tools. Same with a truck working in it's design parameters.

    Seems you can't get that 3,000 plus lbs of payload...in their own documentation...if you intend to haul a slide in camper.

    I towed our 33' 8000lb(loaded) trailer with a 2011 Ecoboost with Max tow pkg for 3 seasons. I loved that truck!! Tons of power and handled the trailer great. I now tow with a 2001 F350 diesel and will say it does handle the trailer a little better with crosswinds. I will admit the stock 7.3L diesel has nothing on the Ecoboost with the 6spd transmission, that is until I installed a chip... :B

    No offense, but a 2000 1/2 ton the OP's truck is not. Personally, I'd rather tow ANY trailer w/ a 2015 F150 max tow EB, with all the advancements (twice the power, 6 spd, integrated trailer brake, sway control, etc.) than a 2000 3/4 ton gasser 4 spd. From a safety, efficiency, or ease of towing standpoint.

    Note: I'm not saying the current F150 is a comparable or better tow vehicle than the current 3/4 ton crop, and frankly, I'm not sure the OP has the right tool for the trailer he wants to tow. I'm just saying, you can't say "aww, it's a 1/2 ton, so ...."

    The main difference, though there are many more, USED to be the RGAWR between
    the fake half ton vs the regular half tons

    4,xxx lb RGARW is the regular half ton rating and is about the same across the
    board for all OEMs I've checked

    5,xxx up to 6,xxx lb RGARW USED to be the fake half ton rating and is also in
    the same ball park as 3/4 ton and lower end of some 1 ton ratings

    Notice that it is +1K to +2K more rating than the regular half ton RGAWR

    That is why some are asking what the OP's rear GAWR is...



    Another easy one is 'P' (passenger class tire) vs 'LT' on the
    fake half ton (light truck tire)

    Note that 'P' class tires used on trucks are required to be de-rated
    a min of 9% of their sidewall max rating...



    All part of the ability to 'manhandle' the trailer well...vs just good enough...

    I have a 2010 Hideout 30BHDS. It comes in around 9,000lbs for everyday camping and is 34' +/- bumper to ball.

    I towed it last year with a 2013 F-150 Crew Cab Max Tow.
    I towed it this year with a 2015 F-250 Crew Cab Gasser.

    The F-150 had all the power in the world and I believed it was stable on the highway around 60mph. I did not feel comfortable going over that. The Ecoboost was top notch

    The F-250 just feels more stable and safe. The 6.2L, while a good engine, does rev high and work harder than the EB did. But stopped, handleing and overall feel is better with the heavier truck.

    After the two experiences, I would go with the 3/4 ton all the time when given the chance.

2015 Keystone Sprinter 295 Dry Weight 7830# GVW 10300#

This post is strictly for those who are looking for real life experiences towing big trailers with a half ton truck. I have seen several topics that seem to be asking for these experiences but all you get is people breaking down your numbers for you on paper. I bought the sprinter last week and we pulled it home with the F-150, all highway. It did well IMO, you could feel the semis when you were around them. But also after talking to my dad who pulls the same size TT with his F-350, he confirmed that semis pushed and pulled him as well which didn't surprise me. So this past weekend we took the camper on its maiden voyage. I did roughly 5 hours of pulling, some large freeway with semis all around, but probably 75% of the driving was state highways, 55 mph speed limit. Those kind of roads. I thought the truck did excellent handling the trailer. Even when around the semis I seemed to notice them much less than when we pulled it home from the dealer. Yes my fuel mileage was ****py at 8 mpg. But what do you honestly expect with a v-6 twin turbo under a load. I lock the truck out of 6th to avoid alot of shifting and did the whole trip in mainly 4th and 5th. The truck is so smooth and powerful IMO and I love it. So what it boils down too is yes, that is a massive trailer for a 1/2 ton truck. Yes it handled it great in my eyes. Would I want the same setup pulling through the rockies or other large mountains, no probably not. Its all about what you intend to do with it your setup. You're going to have some sway with a TT this long, its a massive sail catching alot of wind. Take it easy and take your time. As anyone should do pulling a trailer of any size I think. I just really wanted to share my experience with others out there wanting the same kind of setup.

Your Dad should have advised you against your combo. His truck has a lot more meat on the table to control that huge tail!

A little incorrect on the 3000+ lbs of payload. You linked the max camper load. Which from most manufactures, you need to add in the number of seat belt times 150 lbs to the max camper load to get actual \"payload\"!

Taking the highest camper load at 2800 lbs for a reg cab 4x4, plus 3 people at 450 lbs equals 3250 lbs of total payload. So 50 lbs shy of the max listed....Close enough for my rear end any how! If ford is not using 150 lbs per person, but say 160-170, we would be in the 3300 lbs ball game.

One has to know which numbers to look at, and how they add up etc.

Trucks sticker payload is 2090. My Sherline scale shows typically between 1050 and 1100 lbs. on the hitch. If I'm getting close to the 1150 hitch limit, I just move some things to the pickup bed. Very nice to have enough payload to have that option. We've only had the new TT since January, but have been to the Smokies - absolutely no problem. On highway, I actually seem more stable with the push/pull from trucks than I did with smaller trailer but that could be the equalizer over the E2 I had. Cross winds are noticeable. My wife has no problem driving and together we have knocked out the 600 miles to Disney in one day. Never drive over 60, but never did with the other trailer either. Would or could a 350 do better, possibly, but I ordered this truck knowing exactly what I wanted and that I may tow somewhat larger in the future(at the time only had a 24' TT).
