I remember helping my dad make a 2-horse/horse trailer from scratch in our garage for taking the horses hunting and getting hay.Very sturdily built.I also remember one of my dads carpenters making a complete truck camper from scratch with metal siding..
Back in the day around our area, truck campers were the solution to haul horses for hunting and take the boat along fishing in the hills. But that was when Boise was about 37K and pre-I-84. and it was actually 16 miles or something like that to Meridian:B
Just out of high school waiting for the army I worked at two local trailer factories they had out by Gowen Field that made travel trailers and truck campers..One was Kit and the other Security...I was feeling ritzy in 1976 and bought a brand new Chevy Scottsdale 1500 and put a brand new Security 8ft overhead camper on it..The only mod was a set of 2500lb coil springs that bolted on the axle to support the leaf springs..Heck,it worked just dandy along with some stake pocket tie downs.
Went all over the hills of Idaho in both 2WD and 4WD with that setup.
