I have a permanent mount on the roof, with a bar going East-West. Of course it has to be strong enough of a mounting to not risk coming off while driving on the freeway. As it happens, it was so strong that it withstood my accident last Fall when I hit a parking garage roof. In fact, the amount of damage both to the mounts and to the roof of the Avion was surprisingly light, though expensive to fix.
If you want to take them off, then you're right. Have to find a place to tuck them for transport.
