You are right that my F350 is a 6.75' bed. With the tailgate down there is 8' of flat space. Fortunately my C10 already had the floor rebuilt and reinforced with 2x4 framework. So my tailgate desnt really see any load. InfAct I have hauled the Avion with the tailgate on and off and there is no difference in the camper not on the road. But if you have the stock floor, I would not necessarily trust the 8' floor on a short bed with out additional support. You could haul it on a short bed provided you add some support from the bed over the tailgate like several 4x4's etc.
