You are thinking of ones built on European Trucks they are large and yes non US owners do take them Off Road.
Leave you with a Truck Camper photo that is unique to Australia. This is a Australian designed and built Chrysler Valiant with a 265 cu in straight six( not slant) "ute" with a Millard TC. Millard still makes an updated all compasite version. This photo dates from the 1970's
