I really enjoyed my time in Maine... I was in the USAF 55 years ago and grew from a teenager to a man in the years that I was there. My time there reinforced my independence... my ability to survive on my own. I hunted and fished in impenatratable woods... never quite lost but often not sure where I was.
Most of the locals that I knew depended on themselves... not on others. They wouldn't need the security blanketof parking their camper beside someone they'd never seen before... thing that the other people would protect them... they'd take care of themselves... jusy like me.
The Air Force base took on the flavor of the locals... most of the military staff was there for years.
I'm on several FB pages that are about Loring AFB or Limestone, ME... amazingly enough everyone misses Loring and the area... the 12 feet of snow, the 30 degees below... 65 degree F wind chill was just part of our day... we went sleigh riding, skiing, ice fishing, ice skating... had a ball. We celebrated summer on the 4th of July weekend... yep, that was about it.
It's a beautiful place... I recommend that everyone put the area on their bucket list.
Remember... Maine is the biggest state east of the Missippi River... with a very small population...
I'd live there in a heart beat... but janet says no... and I know who is in charge.
