In the early 1940's My grand parents house din't have a toilet in the house... there was a privy on the creek bank just to the right of where my truck is sitting in the last picture.
The creeks name is Dry Branch... when the water would rise in the creek it apparently "flushed the pit"
Every house along this highway had a privy... or you might call them "out houses."
I can remember when they installed the indoor plumbing in the house in 1945... and a cesspool under the lawn (it was an early type of septic tank), it composted the solids but a pipe drained liquids to the creek.
The world has come a long way... think about all of those privys and the waste from the dairy being dumped into a small creek.
Some of you may have experienced it.
