There was a cable barge located here where you hoped that the barge would already be on your side of the river, you would step into the large flat bottom boat, go to the front of the boat (at least the front as pointed to where you wanted to go).... you'd hold on to the cable and walk to the back of the boat... propelling you forward... then you'd walk to the front again , grab the cable and repeat. Fun for a kid....
... since everyone was the operator and it didn't return until someone else needed to cross the opposite way... someone might have to swim accros to get the barge if people were in a hurry.
Good in the summer... not happening in the winter. And the ice would be too thin to walk on all the way accross.
The beach that you can see is made up of very nice sand. There was a commercial swimming beach there with a dance pavillion and honky tonk beer joint.
