This is our 4th summer in Alaska and I have to say this has been the wettest one yet. The good thing is it usually doesn't rain all that hard so with a rain jacket and a good hat we can continue exploring the sights and sites!

Good luck with your animal spotting in Denali. We had a fantastic week at Tek in July seeing all the "Big 5" plus the mountain was out several days. The cool wet days will bring more activity from the animals which should increase your sightings!

Enjoy it while you can and remember at least it is not 100+ here in Alaska!

We're in Valdez too. Yeah rain, but only since last Tuesday. We're full up with over 1300 shrimp, 10 dozen jars of canned pink salmon, well over 100 pounds of halibut in the freezer and we're just starting on Coho (silver) salmon. About 15 more and we've filled up the 13 cu ft chest freezer, the 3 1/2 cu ft basement freezer and the 3 door inside refrigerator. We fish from an open 14' inflatable. Rain is what you need rain gear for.

^^^ Based on more than 50 years in AK, the above is what it's all about. Growing up in Los Anchorage (admittedly, decades ago), the saying was "It's raining everyday? Must be summertime."

If it's not too cold out (i.e. no cooler than 55 or so) and if one has quick access to a car/cabin/RV for the end of the hike, I usually just wear whatever I have on and if it gets wet, so be it.

We're in Soldotna right now leaving in the morning,we're cutting our trip in Alaska short since with all the cloud cover at night and the weather forecasting isn't looking so good for seeing the northern lights. that's one of the thing I came up here to do photograph them, but time isn't on my side.

Maybe I'll get lucky going through Canada on my way to Yellowstone NP.
