Arkansas Hwy. 1 or US 49??

I am looking for an alternate route between Jonesboro, Arkansas to Grenada, Mississippi and avoid Memphis. Checking with mapquest it shows these two highways.

Which one would be better to use if either one?
  • Personally, I would go thru Memphis, all divided highway, about 170 miles. Generally easy accessible low fuel prices in West Memphis before crossing the Miss River.

Hwy 1 is all 2-lane, and you have traffic in both Wynne and Forrest City, plus Helena/West Helena about 210 miles.

Hwy 49 has no towns of any size, excluding bypass around Brinkley and Helena/W Helena, about 220 miles. Delta country -less hills than Hwy 1. Probably least amount of traffic.
  • stay on Hwy.1 to West Helena 49 to river.it is a good road,lookout
for farm equip.I live south of Jonesboro on Hwy 1
  • We just took I-55 south thru Memphis. Went thru at around 2pm on a Wednesday. Wasn't bad at all. We then took I-55 thru Jackson -- not horrible and then got on to US49. Took US 49 down to Magee. When we left there, a trucker told us to go to I-59 South to 98 West which would take us back to US 49 south connection. We totally avoided Hattiesburg and it was an easy route around that city. We then took US 49 to the gulf. It was a good easy route until Gulfport city limits, then a lot of traffic and traffic lights.
