Best route from Carlsbad NM to San Antonio TX

We are pulling a 38 ft Carriage fifth wheel and were planning to take Hwy 285 from Carlsbad to I-10 into San Antonio. Does anyone have any current information on the condition of Hwy 285 southbound? Pulling into the park tonight we ran into someone who said they just came northbound up Hwy 285 and their RV sustained damage due to poor road conditions, huge potholes, etc. They recommended not travel on 285. The alternate route takes us about 150 miles out of our way. We checked Drive Texas site and see nothing about poor road conditions on Hwy 285 going southbound from NM to around Fort Stockton. Anyone have additional info on this?
  • Since 285 is a US highway it should be better than most. I too checked the website drivetexas.org and it does not currently show any road flooding in that area. Geeze, frizzen, don't know why you'd send him that far north.
  • Take 62/180 East to Anson and then south on 277. 25 miles to I 20 if you want to go east on it. When you get to Anson go 5 blocks north and check out the courthouse in the middle of the road.

Could keep going east to Weatherford and then south.
  • I cannot specifically address hwy 285 but that entire area has had a lot of rain recently and combining that with the heavy truck traffic on some of these secondary roads does create problems. I just came through Carlsbad this afternoon and it was clear there but still lots of storm clouds in the general direction of 285.

Not sure what alternate was suggested but if you go South on 62/180 toward GMNP you could take hwy 54 to Sierra Blanca and pick up I-10 there. It is longer but may be in better shape.

Sorry that I could not give you more specific info on 285, but if it seems too bad just slow down and try to ease along through the rough parts. Do watch for water on the road and along the shoulders though.
