Buffalo, NY to Clinton, CT

Take look at I84 to CT9 (4 lane) South to 95 in Saybrook. You can backtrack on 95 to Clinton. Also you could get off 9 at exit 9 on CT 81 south to Clinton it is a 2lane state rd I go down it with my 38ft. Where are you staying? Hammonasset state park or Riverdale campground? There is a very low bridge on 81 into Clinton center but you can jump on 95 go one exit to access both campgrounds. 34 to 95 will put you on 95 at New Haven lots of traffic. Route 17 is now also known as I-86, and is entirely suitable for a motorhome. (I'm not as familiar with route 20, though I believe it to be fine, and route 14). I would be tempted to take 20A and catch I-390 around Geneseo, perhaps staying at Letchworth state park, and perhaps visiting the Corning Glass Museum...but those are just my personal preferences.

Parts of 17/I-86 are kind of desolate. Don't try to stretch too far between gas stops along it.

Perhaps I can give you a few other ideas. Today we drove from 17 South to 6 East. 6 East is really a pretty road, heading to Bear Mountain. Then we took State Road 293, driving around the camps of West Point. The next roads were 9 West/South and 218.We will plan to visit the West Point Museum on 218. We crossed the Bear Mountain Bridge into Stony Point. Beautiful with the fall colors with water alongside all the way. There were many sights that we want to return to on this route: Croton Gorge Park, Muscoot Farm. 9 South, 129, 118 south... I do not suggest 684 East - this is a very bumpy road.

Our drive today was very loose...letting ourselves explore. We wanted to stay off as many interstates as we could. We loved the area along the Hudson River and Bear Mountain.

We've enjoyed our route 14 drive south along the lake and route 17 is one of my favorite drives...especially in fall with the leaves. 17 is a bit up and down but a pleasant drive (much more than the toll road)...dramatically less cars (like wow less). The rest areas are sparse (no big deal) as are the places to grab a bite but you can find places easily enough...just not flooded with those kind of services.
Might I suggest Watkins Glen State Park? Great park but not all sites have electric so get on the electric loop. Great hiking in the Glen if you are so inclined (not be missed)...not sure what time of year you are going.
Wineries to be found also.

14 is fine going south,or go a bit further and use 414 south on the east side of the lake either will put you into Watkins Glen. Both are on the wine trails if you hava that interest. Sampson State Park on the east side of Seneca is highly recommended. Electric only,but dump station and water are available.
