Casper to Rawlins, Wyoming on to Boise, ID

US 30 from I-80 to i-15 is a good shortcut to avoid the SLC area - the road is good 2-lane with rolling hills and passing lanes.

Yes, we're in a bit of a hurry. Trying to find best route possible...sorry we can't stop and check out some of the neat historical sites.

Also was wondering about Hwy 30 heading north off of I-80 into Idaho whether it would be quicker but don't know anything about that road either.

Sounds like you are in a hurry BUT it's only a half hour longer and 40 miles shorter to go through the Tetons/Jackson hole (one of my favorite places and one I can go back to often). You could make it faster and 60 miles shorter by going over Teton Pass on 22 (not recommended for most) so south out of Jackson to 26 to Idaho Falls, I-15S to I-86 to I-84 to Boise... a total of 670 miles which I doubt you will do in one day so all the more reason to go through the Tetons. Did I mention I really love seeing the Tetons, even as a drive through.

We enjoyed our drive on route 220 from Casper in June last year. Our destination was Lander, so we didn't drive 287 to Rawlins. Route 220 was a good road through what I would consider pretty much uninhabited country. There may have been some small towns, but I must have blinked and missed them.

Along 220 you will pass several Oregon Trail sites. There is a rest stop at Independence Rock. A few miles on is Devil's Gate and further on Split Rock is easily visible some miles from the road.

Thanks for information! Since I'm the "nag-ivator" it's my fault if we go a route that becomes a real white knuckle trip! Appreciate information.

What can be said about 220 & 287? Typical 2 lane 65 mph WY road. WY 2 lane roads are pretty good. When they lower the speed limit in small towns obey the signs. They need revenue. I like to drive with my lights on all 2 lane roads. Fuel stations are high priced in some of these little towns. I'd fill up in Casper. They have tours through the old territorial prison in Rawlins. Although it is worth the stop their parking lot is not that large. We were able to get in and park with our 19' TT but tight. You'll miss the worst of I-80 from Rawlins to Cheyenne. Rawlins westward is pretty good. We have 2 seasons in Wy. Winter and road construction. Check

We used to stop off at Little America for overnight on I-80 but they closed down their restaurant. Only 50 cent cones and high priced fuel.

We just used routes 220 and 287 a couple weeks ago. They were fine. We stayed at a KOA in Rawlins and it was not.
