Chattanooga south on US 27 in Georgia

We're in Chattanooga right now and we'll be heading home to Louisiana in a couple of days. We would like to avoid I-59 in Alabama north of Gadsden on the return trip--40 miles of some of the worst roads I've ever experienced (our traveling buddies had tire problems likely associated with this road). Been looking at taking US 27 south to I-20 but I'm unfamiliar with the route. There doesn't appear to be any significant construction going on. Anyone familiar with this road? Possible problem spots for two of us pulling 34 ft. fifth wheels?

Thanks in advance.

I asked a few days ago, on the forum, about the shape of I-59 through Alabama and was told it was in much better shape. So is it better or should I take Hwy 11 from Gadsden to Fort Payne?

The really bad part just north of Gadsden has been fixed, and is real smooth. The rest is still like it was.
  • I drove I 59 last weekend, No pot holes but very rough from GA to Gadsden

  • You could take The Lookout Mountain Parkway down to Gadsden AL then hop back on I 59. Roads should be better then. The Lookout Mtn Parkway is a 2 lane drive along the Ridge very scenic.
  • It's not bad, 4 lane most of the way. I take I-75 south to exit 312 and GA-53 over to Rome and US-27 south from there. US-27 will be slow out of Chattanooga through Fort Oglethorpe GA and through Summerville GA. Miles of low speed limits and lights. Going down through Calhoun avoids this. Be sure to take the loop around Rome.

27 is a good road. No problems.

x2, drove it many times to avoid I75 and Atlanta.
