Colorado 67

Im going to be traveling between Colorado Springs and Denver on a day unhooked from my trailer, and in my previous post a forum member recommended I get off the major highways and enjoy the "real colorado". So thats what im going to do!
Google maps shows that a section of it may be a dirt logging road? im not sure. Has anyone taken this road, or can recommend another non interstate route?

Thanks
  • CO 83 from the NE side of the Springs to the SE side of the Denver metro area. Beautiful, easy drive, only congested once you get to the Parker area.

CO 67 is doable. H E R E - AAA Guide is a AAA guide to the road, with pictures along the way. It will likely be less traveled than CO 83.
  • Hwy 67 is NOT a dirt logging road as you suggest. It is a good paved hwy from Woodland Park north and meanders along the S. Platte River. It does have a couple of miles of gravel but is in great condition.

It is pretty but not spectacular. I drive it now and then to fish a little and target shoot. It is relaxing until you reach Sedalia, then you are back in traffic.
  • IMHO, CO 67 is not one of the more scenic back ways along the Front Range. If your goal is to go from Co Spgs to Denver, might I suggest CO 105 north from Palmer Lake. In the rolling hills in front of the mountains, but rural and scenic.

Other roads I might suggest around Denver would be CO 119, 72, or 7 north of I-70. Great scenery and not too much traffic once you get north of Black Hawk.

If you're based out of CO Spgs, take CO 115 south through Penrose. Catch CO 67 south to CO 96 and head west to CO 165. Check out Bishops Castle and Lake Isabel. Then either 1) continue on through Rye to I-25. Catch some BBQ at Obie's right at the interchanges. Then north back to Co Spgs. Or 2) back track to CO 96 and head west through Silver Cliff and Westcliffe, north on CO 69 to US 50 and your choice of routes back to Co Spgs. Parts of this are on the Frontier Pathways Scenic Byway.

Or try CO 67 south from US 24. Pass through Cripple Creek and Victor, continuing on south on the Phantom Canyon Road. This is part of the Gold Belt Tour. More info here. You go through the old mining towns then down the old railroad grade. Scenic and interesting. South of Victor, quite a bit of this is graded gravel.

With the Bar-b-Que and Bishops Castle this is a real "road trip". I'll put this on the agenda for the next trip to Colorado.

Ken was nicer and shorter than my directions to Denver - west on 24 to Buena Vista then up to Leadville down on 91 to I-70 to Denver. Beautiful drive 5 hours and 250 miles of fun. (might slide off on Rt 6 into Golden then on to Denver)

With K's in Buena Vista for lunch and Quincy's in Leadville for dinner.

Might need a sports car for this drive.

    BOL,
  • Thanks for the tips and advice everyone

I'm going to start looking at the different routes suggested and try to make a pick.
