Colorado Highway

We are planning to stay in Central City, Colorado in late May. From Central City we want to go to Estes Park, Colorado. I would like to take Hwy 119 to Nederland then Hwy 72 north to Hwy 7 then into Estes Park.

We will be traveling in a 40' DP pulling a vehicle.

Is there anything that could be a problem on this route?
  • I was going to tell you to do the 6 off the interstate to the 119 but see you are going to stay in CC!

The Peak To Peak is beautiful - we drove it a lot when we lived in Estes.

You will have some bends and all around Nederland and the 7 gets kinda narrow in a few places, but certainly doable.

To the best of my knowledge all the damage that was done with the massive storm / flooding did not affect the 7 too much but you might check on status of the roads in and out of Estes.

Hwy 34 out, if you are doing that, is "open" but old friends there tell me it is marginal for rv travel. Don't know about the 36 at this point as to how the repairs are going.

    Be safe.
  • We stayed at the Central City KOA last summer. Nice place. It's a haul getting up there, but worth it.
  • Thanks for the information.

We will be staying at the Central City KOA before we head to Estes Park. Looking forward to seeing the area again. I was raised in Arvada and moved away after college. I went back to a high school class reunion in 1993 and haven't been back since then.

Back in the day, we would go to CC then head out on the dirt roads to Nevadaville and some of the old mining camps. I'm sure a lot has changed.
  • We gone that route many times. It is called the "Peak to Peak Highway." We are towing a 34' fifth-wheel. I always enjoy it, though I have to say there are almost NO straight or level places on this entire route. In other words, it is crooked and up and down.

Still no reason not to go that way. It is the way we choose to go.
  • You may have a problem driving IN and THROUGH Central City, as the streets are narrow and steep. The hiway to Estes is fine.
  • Done most of it with our 5er, 55'LOA. No problem. All kinds of vehicles on that road.
