Copper Canyon/Creel

We are thinking of heading to Copper Canyon/Creel in January 2017 in our Vegas 24.1.

Thoughts anyone? We are very comfortable travelling in Mexico, having spent months there over the last 15 years or so.

My bride of 43 years thinks we need to go to Michigan in January to see our first great grand child due around Christmas. I told her that is granny duty. So I might ride my BMW R1200GS with sidecar instead of the Vegas.

It is nice to be retired!
  • Been there............. also have driven from Creel to the bottom of the canyon. Batopilas is at the canyon floor and will be warm in the winter. Creel is near the rim and will be cold. I left my RV in Creel as there is no place for RVs in Batopilas. We had snow in Creel, just an inch but it does get cold there. There are a couple of small hotels in Batopilas, but there is no Pemex station there.
  • Pick Nogales, or a bit west, at Lukeville (drive south from Gila Bend, AZ). That would get you on Mexico 15, a long drive, maybe sto at San CArlos, then drive on, to eventually turn east from Los Moches, go to El Fuerte and take the train from there. The campground where we stayed in years past, is not there now, but there are places you can park near motels that will look out for your rig. Taxi to the train, where the interesting parts happen faster than if you started at Los Mochis.

Ah, a hack driver. Man after my own heart. I'm an ex-hack driver, having sold my BMW K100/EML 2001GT rig in a moment of insanity. On two wheels now. I'd like to hear about your rig-where will u cross into Mexico? I am in Louisiana.

Couple years ago we rode down the east coast of Mexico on bikes. Mistake, I think, should have gone a different route. We didn't go to copper canyon, another mistake.

Thinking of crossing into Mexico somewhere between Yuma & El Paso. Not sure yet.

My hack is a 2005 R1200GS with a DMC Expedition sidecar. Took a trip to northern Alaska from Washington state (home) in 2014. Fantastic way to travel on calcium loaded roads when wet! Rode about 10,000 miles in 30 days. Awesome trip.

  • We have an Rv caravan going there mid Feb, if you are interested, pm me. Otherwise what info are you looking for?
  • It is a truly stunning experience. Take the trip and never regret it! Be sure to ride the train as that is stunning too.
