- joloooteExplorer180 from Silver City north is a beautiful, but slo uphill drive. Wonderful No frills Forest campground at Luna lake if you want to hear the Elk Bugle. If u'r going to Petrified forest to see petrified wood, don't bother. Almost none left there. Its all in Holbrook front yards. If you come into Holbrook from the south on 180 you'll pass a company that sells all you want! Very impressive display of Giant logs along the Hyway.
- mileshuffExplorerI've not drive then route but have been along the stretch between Luna Lake and Springerville many times. Very scenic mountain area. It can get significant snow at times so watch the weather. There is a very nice RV park just south of Alpine. Probably not open until May.
- Sandia_ManExplorer IIAt this time roads are pretty clear, this is certainly not a timesaver or short cut if you don't have any actual stops along the way. As mentioned above fuel is very scarce along that route, there are always steep inclines anywhere in the mountain west although nothing overly pronounced along this course. There are numerous spectacular places to stop along the way, hope you have a great trip enjoying the Gila Wilderness.
- ndrorderExplorerPlan fuel appropriately. The stations are few and far between.
- NMDriver2ExplorerNothing to steep but a lot of up and down on 180. If you are going to see the petrified forest then turn about 15 miles before Holbrook and take the Petrified Forest Rd through the park up to I-40.
- kenwautooneExplorerYes ,but you're not going to go very fast in a lot of places.one of the most scenic roads in America
