Two questions remain for my planning. Can a Mexican TIP be renewed simply by departing and returning within a day or so?
And what about the countries further south? What of the restrictions concerning renewal and extension there? Anyone been there and back?

I think so, I led a caravan down last fall, crossed back in December, cancelled the permit, then got another one a couple of weeks later.
