east bound Pa road conditions?

Heading east thru Pa from I81 on I78, I80 or I84 in early June. Which has the fewest problems? I drove I78 the first week of May and there was a lot of road work/single lane just west of the Allentown area. Read on here that I84 was in very rough shape with lots of pot holes. How is I80? I took I78 to 209 to Milford in May. The National Park road is very nice now, very smooth. But the area from Stroudsburg north on 209 is rough and slow going. I like I78 because it avoids the steep hills on I81 north to I84. In May PennDot said expect significant construction delays on I78, but it wasn't too bad on a Saturday. Any local advice would be appreciated. Will be driving a 38'MH.
  • I-78 road work is at night, so you should be OK during the day. Now, having said that........

as noted in another reply to your post, I-78 sees LOTS of truck traffic. In spite of the fact that this end of I-78 in PA is a "TEA" (Targeted Enforcement Area) the 55 mph speed limit is rarely enforced. Traffic merging in from the ramps WILL pull right out in front of you. In some stretches you'll be doing 70 and only keeping up with "the flow." In May and June we had 4 accidents with fatalities, 3 of which involved trucks.

Personally, I hate this highway so if you use I-78 please be on your guard. If you are eastbound the dangerous interchange is at Rt. 100 in Fogelsville. Get in the left lane as soon as you see the brewery and stay there until after the I-78/Rt. 22 split. Be safe.
  • Starting to plan our winter trip to Florida from N Vermont the middle of January 2015 towing a 26' TT and would like to know experiences going across I-84 from the NYS Thruway at Newburgh,NY to Scranton, PA to then head south on I-81. Have been told there are some big hills on I-84 that could be a problem in January. Thanks for advice on this route and some alternatives.

Thanks. I found out that after I went thru in early May they switched to doing the repairs at night. So I guess all lanes will be open during the day. Hope so, the truck traffic gets really heavy approaching Rt 33.
