East TN to East Maine Road questions
Going to ask this question of you fine folks because surely someone has been on this path and I need all the help I can get. We have an opportunity in the near future to travel up 81 from East Tennessee up to East Maine. Well, actually Fredericton in Canada but mainly interested in the US side of the travel.
I've broken the trip down with the path I think we'll take, completely avoiding New York City cause I'll avoid driving there like the plague.
We're just doing it in a car, hopefully in 2 days each way. If you guys can comment on what you know of each route I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if it's not possible for 2 drivers (one a fairly new driver) to make it in 2 days I'd like to know this as well. I've done long distances before (NC to Seattle in 5 days) so not a stranger to long trips, but I've never driven North past Baltimore so don't know the roads.
I'm pretty set for travel info til we get to Harrisburg, PA. Haven't been up that far on 81 but have been almost that far but using 95 to Maryland via NC. Can't imagine I'll run into anything too major up 81 up til this point.
From Harrisburg I'm going to continue up 81 to Scranton PA before heading East on 84 going through Danbury and Waterbury in Connecticut and making our way to 95 past Auburn via 495.
Once on 95 it looks like it's a straight shot on the Maine Turnpike to Houlton, Maine where we'll cross into Canada to Fredericton.
Sounds confusing, let's see if I can neaten it up.
81 North to Scranton PA
84 East to Auburn Connecticut
Getting to 95 via 495 and another highway going around Boston
95 to Fredericton
And than repeat on the way back.
I know there are tolls once I get past Scranton, any idea how much we're talking about for a Jeep, not towing anything? I'll check whatever website but if someone has first hand experience it would be appreciated.
Also, if anyone has done this path, is there a better way to go? I'd like to avoid the big cities, time is going to be our big concern, the quickest travel possible is the best.
I'd love to stop at a few places heading up or coming back, but it's not likely to happen this go round.
Any and all info I'd appreciate...other than "Don't do it" because it looks like it has to be done. And life is short, might as well find the adventure when you can!
