from virginia beach to maine

We are a 40 ft class a with a tow car. From the virginia coast what is the easiest way to get around the big cities and get to maine?

    That's I-93. I-95 is route 128 and goes around. Even so, 128 is a busy commuter road and should also be avoided. I-495 is the way to go.

    He said he wanted to go around the big cities, not through them.

    I-64 to I-295 to I-95 to Fredricksburg VA to pick up US17/US50 to Winchester VA where you can pick up I-81.

    From there you have a few choices;

    Choice 1 - I-81 to I-84 in Scranton, I-84 to I-90 (Mass Pike), I-290 to I-495 to I-95 to Maine.

    Choice 2 - I-81 to Harrisburg to pick up I-78 to I-287 over the Tappan Zee to I-684 to I-84 then as above.

    For either of these, you can continue up I-87 to pick up the Mass Pike to avoid Hartford CT.

    An alternate to going west (although it's not that far west) is to do the CCBT to pick up US 13 and up the DelMarVa to the Delaware Memorial bridge, I-295 to the Garden State Parkway. This tops out in northern Jersey at the Tappan Zee Bridge.

    You also have at least a couple of tunnels I can think of one near Virginia Beach on I64 and one at Baltimore on I95 you may want to bypass as well...

    I95 of course goes through all of the big cities up North but hopefully you have by-pass I95 route to use where needed...

    Truckers know where all the drawbacks are. I really see alot of truck traffic coming from MD on US301 here at the Potomac River Bridge... Then they tie back into I95 at Virginia State Highway 207 Intersection... This is how they get around the I95 nightmare during rush hour traffic I reckon...

    Truckers do it all the time so just follow them I reckon haha...

    I never got into the RV Traveling mode just for these reasons... Sometimes being big just may not be worth the benefits...

    Used to meet up with family pulling their very big RV setup coming out of Illinois in Myrtle Beach every year for mini family reunion. They were always beat up pretty bad the first couple of days from the very long trip... By the time they all got to feeling better it was time to head North again haha... Our 450 miles pulling my OFF-ROAD Popup left us both fresh as could be... Now we all just drive down and stay in a great cabin at Lakeside... Lots better all the way around...
