I remember pulling into that gas station in Sweetgrass on my way north. There were more vehicles in the gas station than I'd seen since leaving Great Falls.

And that's 118 miles, so the strategy is to fill up at either end before starting the trip. Much like venturing out in Nevada, you don't leave Las Vegas, Reno, or Carson City with only a 1/4 tank. You fill on the way out.

It is Interstate highway with enough traffic that if there is any stretch much longer than 50 miles without a place to buy fuel, one of the vendors as you approach will have put up a billboard "Last Services for XX Miles" to make sure you know to stop at his place.

If you do let your fuel supply get down to the under 50 mile range, the places you might get into trouble are the lonely state highways and roads on reservations where the only businesses outside tribal centers might be trading posts. When the road gets that lonely, I top off any place I can if at or below half a tank. Interstates don't get that lonely, though maybe the area looks desolate to an urbanite.

Traveling through rural areas off the Interstate in any part of the country, like Delta Country or forest lands, not just the West, first time through I make notes of the places I may want to stop on the next trip, mostly so I can plan my refreshment and rest stops, as well as gas stops. First time through, though, it is best to stop whenever you can, because you can, rather than trying to push on until you must stop.

Wyoming also has some of the cheapest gas in the country, almost always at least 10-15 cents lower than here in Colorado. I used to go to Cheyenne quite frequently, but not as much as I used to, but when I did, I always filled up regardless of what vehicle I was in.

There will be gas available in Pine Bluffs just as you come in to Wyoming. There's also a Loves on the east side of Cheyenne by the Sleep Inn, it's wide open easy to get in to and usually has lower prices than the stations closer in to town.

Going north out of Cheyenne, there's Wheatland, Glendo, Douglas, Glenrock and then Casper. There used to be a station in Chugwater but not any more. So it's about 70 miles or so from Cheyenne to Wheatland. GPS and some other sources state that there's a station in Chugwater, but it was destroyed, along with the only grocery store there, in 2012 when an SUV ran into a gas pump and caused a huge fire. Since then, residents have to drive to either Cheyenne or Wheatland for fuel or groceries. That was a major news item for the local news in Cheyenne at the time, and as far as I know, there's not been any plans to rebuild a station there. It's a really small town, so investment in business there is iffy. Keep that in mind for fueling needs headed out of Cheyenne.

Put the gasbuddy.com app on your smart phone and you'll be able to track fuel stations anywhere you go. You can then estimate how far you can go before filling up, especially useful when traveling to new destinations and you've got no idea where the next station is.

It might be the 'Old West' but there are 'services' available.

Get down to 1/2 tank.....watch the Exit Signs. They show services available.

Whenever you see fuel and it's a good price, top off your tank. Don't let it get below 1/2. That's what everyone does on their Alaskan trip. Look at the Gas Buddy site and plug in some towns along your route to get a general idea. Everyone needs fuel so there will be some available.
