Getting to Usery Pass, AZ from Scottsdale

Park website suggests 101 south to 60 east to Ellsworth north.

From 91st and Shea, would it be better to go east on Shea to Beeline (87) north, Gilbert rd north, 202 east, McDowell east, Ellsworth north?

A few miles shorter and seems easier since I will be traveling late afternoon and 101 south can get heavy in parts.
  • You didn't say where in Scottsdale you'd be starting but we've taken 101 south to 202 (Red Mtn. Freeway), exiting on to McKellips and head east to Usery Pass Rd, then north a couple miles to the park.

202 is lightly used and a very pleasant drive.

We don't like Hwy 60 anymore - too crowded.

    Have fun. It's a beauty!

    The way to go.
  • The web site must not have been updated since the new freeway was opened back in 2006 or 2007. That is a long time to use the old instructions!

I have used the 202 getting there, and it was a long time ago! Back in 2006, I think that the 202 ended at Power, right near where you will be getting off.

Exit #22 then south to McDowell, east to it ends at Ellsworth, then turn left, go north a couple of miles.

    Fred.
  • What is southbound 101 rush hour like, 4pm-6pm? If its majorly backed up then would Shea east, 87 south, Gilbert rd south, 202 east be a good option? Mileage wise its only 3 or 4 miles further that route.

**Edit...looks like there is no on-ramp from Gilbert rd to the 202.
  • Check for road construction closures on the 202 before traveling. The east entrance just off Gilbert was closed last Sunday.
  • Another route I see is Shea to 87 north to Bush Highway (Saguaro Lake) to Usery Pass. Is Bush highway past Saguaro Lake a good road for towing?

My resistance to 101 is from being stuck in solid stopped rush hour traffic a few times before!
  • Sure Bush highway is fine for towing. A little slow (35mph) and curvy in places but overall a good road. Most is 45 to 50 mph. I have towed both directions from Usery Pass to 87 and it is a beautiful drive.
  • Well we made it! Were able to get on road earlier than planned to took 101 to 202 and traffic was very slow in a few areas but used the HOV lane. A few sections of the HOV were very narrow because of construction.
