Had to make a few trips up to DC and N Carolina while we lived in Santa Rosa Beach. I really miss living there.
Once you hit 85 coming out of Atlanta you can take 185 south to Columbus and then cross the Chattahoochee River using Hwy 80 just north of Columbus to get to 280 and 431 heading south on the Alabama side. There are some small towns along this route to Dothan, but nothing too bad as 431 is mostly divided with 2 lanes in each direction. After Dothan 231 will take you to I-10 and then onto 331 south over the bridge to Hwy 98.
