Gov'nt advisory against non-essential travel to Mexico?

Update. I phoned the insurer and indeed they told me I was not covered if I go into the state listed, no matter if it is related or not to the warnings. So I switched to Blue Cross.

Blue Cross does cover, except if an incident is directly or indirectly related to war, civil war and things alike. In the contract it does not state to check the travel advisory. She told me if an incidence happen and it is not related to a crime or things alike, I will be covered. If I end up between two gun shots of gangs, I am probably not covered, but other than that, I will be covered.

So I switched to Blues Cross, a little more expensive but I will feel more secure.

This is what I am trying understand, if the injuries does not result to any violence, we should be covered. I will check with another insurer.

I am asking here to try to understand the exclusions and seek some advice from travelers that have had difficulties in getting reimbursed if they received medical assistance in a country/state where there was an advice against traveling. I think it is of general interest when Rving in a different country.

Most of those states we are just going through, some we are staying a day to a few days. The risk is not high and I could manage to wait to get medical treatment if possible in a state or town where I know there is no problem for medical assistance covered by my insurance. I also hear that medical assistance is not as expensive in Mexico.

There is actually a portion of the insurance stating that you are not covered or it will be at the discretion of the insurer to cover you or not if you "expose yourself to travel to a country, region or territory not recommended".

The same is explained if you get involved in many types of sports or competition or any activities that requires the Insured Person to sign a liability release form in the event of an accident or you sign a disclaimer in the event of an accident. Same with an accident resulting in alcool abuse.

There are a few exception in some states, here is the north advisory:
Global Affairs Canada advises against non-essential travel to the northern states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León (except the city of Monterrey), Sinaloa (with the exception of Mazatlán), Sonora (except the cities of Hermosillo and Guaymas/San Carlos), and Tamaulipas due to high levels of violence linked to organized crime.

Ask your insurance company if those restrictions also apply to the provinces of British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec ETC. those provinces also have crime in the big cities, ergo the whole province should be under restriction from the insurance company.

In my opinion get a better insurance company, they sound like monumental thief's, if the moon comes up round you are not insured, if the sun is warm at mid-day you are not insured, all cities have areas with bad elements not the whole state, I am positive that the City of Vancouver has some areas where I would not want to go at night, not the whole province!

Same with Mexico there are areas that have crime in the cities not the whole state, you are being taken for a ride, they will tell you that since you traversed through a restricted state the policy is null and void, thanks' for the payment.

If you were unfortunate enough to need medical care while in those Mexican states you could just pay the bill yourself and submit the receipts to your provincial health plan when you return. Part of the cost would probably be covered. Remember medical costs in Mexico are probably less than half of what they would be in USA - their costs are so high, that is why Canadians need the extra insurance.

Being held hostage by an insurance company is worse than anything that will happen to you in Mexico. I feel sorry for people who live under the terms of a company. Life is to be lived not governed.

Why are you asking for an answer in this forum? We are not insurance underwriters. Call the insurance company. NOT THE AGENT. If your insurance is underwritten by Manulife they will refuse coverage of any health incident in those named states. You might also read the policy. I never pay attention to the Gov. travel warnings but I doubt the whole state of Sonora is listed.
