Help me finish my route Nev>Utah....

Stop 1: Twin Falls, ID > W Wendover, NV (Wendover KOA, 1 night) Stop 2: W Wendover > Moab, UT. (Moab Valley RV Resort 2 nights) Stop 3: Moab > Escalante (Canyons of Escanante RV Pk, 3 nights) ..

I'm a freelance outdoor photographer and primary purpose is a photography tour. I'll be going by myself, and stopping in Wendover to photograph the Salt Flats .. In Moab I want to see/photo Arches/Canyonlands. Escalante has slot canyons and near Bryce and the Grand Staircase area.. The days listed are approx, and may stay more/less depending on results. Also, I'm 66 and willing to hike, but would like some routs no more than about 3-4 mi one way. However, now I'm stuck on where to go next from the Escalante area. Guess I could run over to Zion, but whatever I do, I want to migrate back in the directon of Twin Falls again.. Will be pulling a new 18' Jayco Swift with a 96' GMC 1500 5.3 ltr.

Any help from all of you well seasoned travelers ?? (Some of your favorite Photo sites would be appreciated also .. ;))

  • How about Wendover to Zion, including Kolob Canyons, Coral Sands State Park near Kanab, UT, up to Bryce, Kodachrome St. Park, Anasazi St. Park, Escalante, hike to Calf Creek Recreation waterfall, Capitol Reef, then Moab/Canyonlands. Could then also go to Vernal/Dinosaur Nat'l Mon., Flaming Gorge, Bear Lake, ID and home?
  • The most photogenic things I've seen in the area include:
    Moab:
    Dead Horse Pt SP
    road along Colorado River
LaSal Mtns (esp. in the fall)
    Capitol Reef
    UT12
Calf Creek (an easy hike from UT12)
    Bryce
    Cedar Breaks
    Brian Head

Once you get that far west, you could easily drop down to I15, cross into Nevada (headed toward Caliente), and take US93 back home.
  • I don't know hat vehicle you have. We spent 8 or 9 days in Escalante last year. I recommend that you drive as far down Hole-In-The-Rock road as you feel safe doing. You should easily make it to the Dancehall about 45 miles or so. You can walk up the backside of the Dancehall and that puts you maybe a 100 feet up with a good view of the area.

After that you want a good 4WD. And if you try for the Hole-in-the-rock get a good early start to beat the rain. It's about 70 miles or so from the highway, we never made it. Lots of very scenic photo opps on that road, especially early and late near sunset. It rained everyday near sunset for us tho and you don't want to be on those roads in a downpour.

We didn't think much of Peekaboo canyon. It's a long hot walk to get to the first slot canyon and another long hot walk to get to the next section. You definitely don't want to be out there in a storm in the canyons. But I'd try other canyons before doing that one.

We stayed at the Broken Bow CG. All of the CG are basically gravel lots with a few trees but this is the high desert.

Not on your itinerary, but Catheral Rocks road near Torrey (east of Capital Reef) had spectacular photo ops:
