- garyhauptExplorerJust checked at 8:25am and looks like #16 is now open.

I have just done that detour routing a month ago. What a bone rattling ride that Collymount section was. If you are taking the route, be ready to go slow on some of the corners. That's where the worst of it was.
Gary Haupt - afraid_of_bearsExplorerHere's a little more info.
China Nose fire
An alternate detour route has been established via Highway 16:
Travelling East from Houston:
Morice River Forest Service Road for 54 kms, left onto Owen East Forest Service Road (FSR) to Colleymount Road, onto Highway 35 to Burns Lake.
Travelling West from Burns Lake
South on Highway 35 for 23 kms to Colleymount Road for 56 kms to Owen East (FSR), Right on Morice River FSR, to Hwy 16. Houston.
This alternate route is 150 kms. in total, 120 kms is gravel. Watch for Traffic control Stations for directions. Single direction traffic is being piloted using a pilot car from Noralee Resort, Colleymount Road, to the junction of the Owen East FSR/Morice River FSR. Two way traffic is occurring on the rest of the detour route.
Restrictions are in place for permitted over width, overweight & over length load vehicles only.

That fire closure is going to disrupt some travel, in that part of BC. However, the detour they are showing should be very scenic, as it appears to run along the north side of Fraser Lake for many KMs/miles. Any campgrounds in that area that can be recommended by anyone. One of my favorite CGs is in Houston, the Shady Rest, reasonable in cost, squeaky clean, great flower beds from their green house on site and well managed.
The Fraser Lake area is not involved. They have a free campsite at the lake for a few units though. - garyhauptExplorerLots of places in the Smithers area. You can boondock in the Safeway lit...wifi, too. If that gets full, there is a school and nice adjacent roads just across 16.
If a person wanted...run up to Topely, turn right (south) just before the store on Sunset Lake Road and follow the signs for Sunset Lake Rec Site. About a 10 minute drive.
If people are coming down from Stewart, maybe just hang around Kitwanga for the day and night. Smithers and east is going to be pretty crowded, I suspect.
