I heard the road was in bad shape. Has anyone driven it lately. We are pulling a 28 ft trailer.

CA 299 is a good highway, just take your time and enjoy the views................especially the Trinity River. Pulling a trailer will take you about 4 hours.

Just came across towing 32' fiver. One of the prettiest drives in the lower 48. Lots of hills. Construction on small part of drive. Took me 3.5 hours to go 150 miles, with a stop in Weaverville.

Whether the road is in good or bad shape doesn't take away from the fact it is a long way across from Hwy 101 to I 5. You climb and descend over 5 passes, and there are turns and narrow in places. Is it doable`? Yes. is it a good route? I don't like it as it takes a good 5 hours to cross in either direction. But others may have different opinions and more up to date info on current road conditions and maybe road construction going on right now. I use hwy 20 from I 5, Williams, to hwy 101, Ukiah. Maybe others will chime in with more info.

We've travelled the section between Redding and Arcata a few times this season. I enjoy it. Some construction delays going over Buckhorn summit. Some forum members don't like the hills, curves and things like that. The road surface is just fine, IMHO.
