I 75 South Closed / Reopened

The contractor has cleared the bridge from the roadway and it reopened in just under 24 hours. That has got to be a highway construction record!!!

A bridge over I 75 South in Cincinnati fell on I 75 about 11pm yesterday Jan 19. I 75 is CLOSED until they can remove the bridge, expected to take quite a while. The bridge is 2 lanes wide, about 4 lanes long.

Best bet is to take I 275 around Cincinnati. Either way will work.

This bridge was to be taken down but came down on its own. 1 working killed and a truck driver injured when his semi was caught under the edge of the bridge as it fell.
  • Southbound only is affected with traffic stopped right after I-74 merges in, so both I-74 and I-75 SB are affected at the Hopple St. (Univ or Cincinnati) roughly 4-6 mile marker. Expected closure through 1/21/15

If you want to avoid most of the traffic, take I-275 to the east side of town and it will merge up with I-71 and I-75 in Kentucky. For a more direct route, take I-75 south and cut east on either OH 126 or OH 562 to SB I-71.

If you're coming I-74, take I275 S to merge back in with I75 or I71

  • Last news was that the overpass that was being taken down fell too soon and landed on a highway worker. The cleaup was supposed to take two days but is going well is expected to be closed tomorrow only. Until then best to use I 71 or 275 around.
  • I live outside the I-275 loop around Cincinnati and I intend to stay outside of it. I'm retired and no longer have to drive downtown every day. Or any day for that matter.
But I-71, I-75 and I-74 all feed into the I-275 loop. And I-75 and I-71 split up again in Northern Kentucky. Lots of semis pass through here every day. Its already a traffic nightmare during rush hour and this will make it worse.
The bridge that collapsed had already been replaced and they were in the process of taking it down. If it had been carrying normal traffic, there might have been hundreds of deaths.
