I 76 or I 80 from Fair Haven NJ to Allegan, MI

Which route would you recommend? 40ft motor home pulling car hauler trailer. (estimate weight of trailer 8500lbs) Google maps shows around 800 miles. Will do that in 3-4 days. Would like to "boondock" along the way so some "sights" would be appreciated. Thank's to all who respond in advance.
  • We have used the PA Turnpike in the past but got fed up with the high tolls. Our preferred route is I80 across PA to I76 at Youngstown to I71 south to Mansfield, then route 30 west to Fort Wayne. We continue on west from there, but you can take I65 north to I94 and on to Allegan.

We like this route because the only toll we pay is to cross the river at the Delaware Water Gap. Also, route 30 across OH and IN is all divided highway through farmland with few trucks. It's a pleasant relaxed drive but about 60 miles longer for you to get to Allegan.

BTW, we live just south of you in W. Long Branch and lived for 4 years back in the 70's in the tiny town of Alamo a few miles south of Allegan.
  • Teeznu,

I-80 is good to Akron, but unless you like paying for the privilege of driving on their roads, you have to plan you way from there west.

Are you museum people? If yes, come back to me. I have some diversions that will be really good for you.

If you do go close to Cleveland, there is an easy and cheap drive along the Erie shore that we use. It is not difficult it is just the extra navigation.

In Ohio watch your speed. They do target out of state plates and they are sneaky.

  • Since I-76 is the Turnpike, that will cost you a decent penny to make the trip, and run South, than North.... And With Fair Haven being on the Northern part of NJ( in my eyes ) , I would jump on RT 280W to 80W into Ohio..

it's free, BUT the truck traffic is usually heavy, because it's free
