I-79 in West Virginia

How is I-79 in West Virginia for a 40'Class A with a tow vehicle? Is it pretty smooth, or long steep mountain roads? We're headed to Pennsylvania from Kentucky. Thanks for your advice.
  • Can't speak to the part south of Morgantown, but from there east I think you'll be fine. We did it going west back in 2012, from here in S Jersey. I don't recall any tough grades westward, but they might look different going east.

I-68 to Hancock is a very nice ride, no probs. And then I-70E to, I would assume, I-81 is also easy. If my old Bounder can do it, anything can.

  • I travel 81/68/79 regularly since my family lives in the Northern Panhandle and I live in the Eastern Panhandle of Wv. There are three long steep grades. Cooper's Rock outside of Morgantown heading east. Negro Mountain and Sideling Hill. All three have extra lanes for slower traffic. There are a few smaller grades as well. Heading into Cumberland you will slow down to 40 mph and it is a little curvy until you pass through town. Take your time and enjoy the scenery. Just watch for the state troopers in Maryland.. they are everywhere.
  • I wouldn't think you would have a problem on the 79-68-81 route through the mountains. The grades on 68 are 6% and go for miles, but I was able to hold 45 mph in second gear. I don't know how do you do in the mountains but would think a DP wouldn't have any problems going up/down hills.

We just went up that way with the TT, we took 64E out of Louisville to Charleston, WV, then 79N. I think 79 is a nice road, fairly smooth, and moderately hilly, but that's not the biggest challenge depending on where in PA you are headed....

We took 79 to Morgantown WV then 68E to Hagerstown to connect with 81N. Going East out of Morgantown takes you through the Cumberland Gap, and there are a half-dozen looooong grades going East on 68 that will work the equipment.

The scenery is beautiful and it's a nice ride, speed limits 70 all the way.

If you want flatter, I would suggest 71N out of Cincy then 70, 76, or 80 into Penn depending on where you are going. Personally I don't like Ohio, speed limit is 65 and the troopers loooove to write tix.

Thank you so much for the info, we are first headed to Dover and then Lebanon by Hershey.
