I20

Planning a trip from Alabama to Arizona;is i20 in pretty good condition?will be towing a 5er: thanks
  • I've seen the same complaint here many times over about the condition of LA interstates , the state has been for the past 20 years making a transition from cement to asphalt surfaces. It's been slow but the overall condition is far better now than before .

There is a good bypass around to the north. We usually take it. About the same time, but less traffic and not so rough.

I second this suggestion. It is much smoother.
  • Just got back from a trip through Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and stopping in Dallas. Louisiana has vastly improved in my opinion since the last time I went through. first 10-15 miles is still rough.. Shreveport itself is rough. I used the 220 Bypass going too Texas, but stayed on 20 through Shreveport on the way back, just to see. Shreveport still sucks, so use the bypass. Other than that, it's not bad at all.

There is about 5 miles of construction going past Minden, but nothing else. Everything's good.

Mississippi not bad.. Alabama decent enough. Texas okay too. I actually thought West Texas for the most part was the worse of them all (other than through Shreveport itself).

Overall, not nearly as bad as I anticipated. It had been a number of years since I traveled down I20.

  • We drove it a while last month. Louisiana is still the worst.
  • There is quite a bit of construction in the Minden, La. area. I-20 is rough going through Shreveport but it is do-able. Once you cross over into Texas it is a good ride. Enjoy the trip.
  • But if you stay on I-20 which swings around south of Dallas and Fort Worth, unless there is an accident, you should have no trouble. I have never had to slow down. In fact, it's better to try to run at full highway speed to "go with the flow."

Any route through Dallas other than I-20 is an entirely different matter, especially anywhere in the northern portion of the city.
  • I have driven I-20 many times and found it to be fine. The Dallas traffic is heavy, as all large cities.
