Kenai boondocking laws

Heading into the Kenai tomorrow or so. When/where is boondocking legal? Mostly we've been using rec areas, but have seen people camped off the side of the road. Just curious, in case we Fonda particularly beautiful spot
  • Is there anything BESIDES "boondocks" in the Kenai???

Just kidding...I hear Alaska's gotten pretty civilized lately.

As with anywhere else, my advice would be to identify jurisdictional boundaries (National Forest etc.) and inquire directly of their offices per rules governing specific areas.
  • In Alaska the rules as explained to me are: You can park, camp, boondock, anywhere in AK as long as you are off the roadway and there are no signs prohibiting trespassing, parking or camping in the area you choose. Some of the areas on the Kenai are signed, and others are not. We've stopped at spots outside the Whittier cut off at Portage, at the large rest area at the top of the grade after the Sterling Highway heads SW from Turnagain Arm, and at other areas south of Soldatna. Trying to overnight along the Kenai River, especially when the Kings or Reds are running, will prove very very difficult. Fishing for Kings on the Kenai has been severely restricted due to low numbers this year. Check the Emergency Orders before you try to fish anywhere.

We've been AK since June 1 and spent 2 weeks on the Kenai. We're waiting for Pinks in Valdez, but have over 120 lbs of Halibut in the freezers now.

  • The Fred Meyer parking lot draws a crowd. In the Moose Range are Kelly and Peterson Lakes, on a side road south of the highway. Watson Lake a bit farther on the north side. There is beach camping at Deep Creek, Ninilchik and Anchor River.

Once you leave the Moose range about Mile 75 on the Sterling, virtually all land along the highway is private. There are a number of State and municipal cmpgrounds.
  • Thanks for the replies.. Stopped at the BLM headquarters in Anchorage, and the girl behind the counter didn't know the answer

    We'll see.
