What's the road conditions on I-15 south from the 210 thru Temecula to San Diego? I'll be going thru mid day to early afternoon on weekday. Is the 5 an option?

Mid day to early afternoon is the best time for traveling through So Cal. Where are you coming from that you're considering the 5?

I'll be driving from Ventura. I hate the 210, thus the reason for asking about the 5. I hate the idea of driving so far out of the way on the 210. Is the 5 in better shape than the 210?

You can either go out of your way or get in traffic, your option. Why you would even think about taking I5 is beyond me. That makes the 210 look like a Montana HighwayWhy you don't like the 210 in the middle of the day makes no sense.. your other option is the 126 to 14 to 138 to 15 and south

I live in North county San Diego and when I visit my pops in the central valley 9 times out of 10 it is quicker per Google Maps/Waze to go up the 15 to the 210. It is some 17 miles longer I think but ends up being faster overall. If I were towing I would avoid the 5 at all costs.

While I'm extra careful on the I-210 where it intersects with the CA 134 in both directions, how can you "hate" this route to the point of driving miles out of your way? Sounds emotional.

Good luck on your travels in So Cal.

When I used to haul things into LA we would leave Ontario, CA about 4 am to be in LA by 7am about 75 - 80 mile drive , it didn't matter what highway you're on 60, 91, 10, 210. We would leave about 4 am and there would still be 2 million cars and trucks on the road and 1 wreck it would be stop and go, bumper to bumper for miles. Now days if I catch the light red in town I consider it a traffic jam.

I don't care if the weather is perfect or the money is great or the girls are pretty, California traffic ain't for me !!!

What? The 126 is brand new and baby butt smooth.. I was on it twice today

When heading west I took the 126 at Magic Mountain so I'll try the 118 when I head back east. I'm staying away from the 5 around the 126. What a mess. That stretch of the 5 horrible.

Just wondering -- in the rest of the US, do folks spend as much time as we Californians do in planning around freeway congestion? I'm guessing they don't. Maybe in Seattle?

Every time we leave our neighborhood, we have to check traffic and plan alternates in case of a last-minute problem. The passenger calls up the traffic apps on her phone, advising of late-breaking situations. Failure to optimize the route can lead to an extra half hour or more of travel time. It's not the worst problem in the world (compared to living in a war zone, for example), but it is a constant hassle.

The weather sure is nice, though.

I've used both the 118 and the 126. Both are fairly good. The Sigalert app can be useful to see how the traffic runs.

One can also use the 23 between Filmore and Moorpark.

Using the 126 to the 5 the traffic around Magic Mountain isn't good, and the road isn't good. If you opt for the 118 there is the Santa Suzanna Pass which is better paved but steeper.

If on the 5 going south, once over the hill its very hard to transition to the 210 because of the high speed non-courteous drivers who don't want you to change lanes.

Coming from Ventura, I use the 118 to connect to the 210 through Simi and the valley. I find that the 5 is just too bumpy and crowded. Timing is everything on the LA freeways.

Its narrow(er)
There's a million interchanges, all merging from equally crowded freeways
It's LOADED with trucks
It's loaded with traffic
It's loaded with accidents, probably for all the above reasons
Do you not see the endless posts on this forum about how to get around the 5 and LA traffic?
Guess what the suggested route is every time?

The 5 is suitable for RVs but it's congested much of the time. And most of the slow lanes on the 210 are in decent condition, at least on the eastern portion of the 210.

Is the 5 really that bad for a 30' MH to travel on from north to south mid day? Is it because of stop and go traffic? Or is just not suited for RV travel? Just looking at maps it sure would save some miles. If it's just because of heavy traffic, that doesn't bother me as much as the rough truck lanes on the 210.

If you can get thru Pasadena before 2:30 PM on a weekday, traffic to the I-15 will be fairly easy. I would recommend even earlier. I'm not too sure how the I-15 is on a weekday afternoon.
