mapping software

I wish I had a good answer to your question, but I am afraid this is another instance of everything going to the internet or "the cloud."

I am still using the 2010 version of "Trailer Life Navigator." I have the 2013 version which was produced by Undertow Software without the cooperation or partnership with Trailer Life. It is not nearly so useful. Unfortunately, these programs are becoming more outdated as far as campground information each year. Still, this is by far the best program I have for trip planning.

I have corresponded with Trailer Life about this, but there seems to be no willingness to produce a new program which would work like these above do.

The great value of such a program on one's own desktop computer is in long range trip planning. I have not found any of the "on line" programs to be nearly as helpful.

I wish I had a better response to your question. Perhaps someone else will. But I have to say that all of the suggestions made in many such posts on this forum have not proven to meet my needs.

Maybe its time to go back to the old standby, the Rand McNally road atlas.

Another S&T refugee here also. Still using 2011 version. I have had a quick look at Delorme. After a few hours, didn't like it but that could be me.

Very disappointed that there is no more S&Ts. A GPS is fine for taking you from A to B but it does not come close to having what amounts to a very detailed atlas on the laptop right in front of the naviguesser.

DeLorme Street Atlas is my choice too. DeLorme also has a bundle with a nice GPS receiver.

I feel your pain. I'm also using MS S&T (2013) for general route planning, and then using MapSource (also abandoned) to upload the routes to my old Zumo 660 that I can move between the motorhome and the car. Ugh--just reading that is depressing. Everything on that list is a relic (including me, but that's a different story).

My techno-savvy, totally hip son scolded me for being out of it, and told me I could use Google Maps off-line by downloading the maps (there's an option to do that). I tried it and found Google Maps to be an inferior alternative to S&T. When I showed my son the S&T functionality I was trying to duplicate, he changed his mind, realized how much better S&T was, and then bought a copy for himself on eBay!

I plan on moving to Delorme Street Atlas before our next big trip. I tried the 2005 version many years ago, never got comfortable using it, and decided I liked S&T better anyway. Now I guess I have no choice.

One more Orphaned MSST user - I remember in 05 working on a project with a younger group - I went out a bought 6 copies and passed them out - they were used by all - they loved them and all you could do with the program. ($9.99 at Staples)

Does the MSST 2011 map even work in MS 8.1 today?

Just thinking about this makes me feel so OLD!

10 years ago it was the cutting edge today a Dinosaur - probably find them digging it up at Dinosaur NM.

I'm still using S&T 11. I already know how to get to the expressway from my home. And I've found that the Interstates don't change much. After I've laid out my general route from beginning to end, I do a quick check with the printed maps in the Motor Carriers Road Atlas to check for tunnel clearances. If semis can make it, so can I. I don't want to make my 'C' a convertible.
What may change is the local roads to my overnights. I've found that the rest areas as I enter a state often have free local maps as well folks behind the counter that know about current construction delays. Also a good time to get directions to the closest "Ripley's Believe it or Not". :)

If you use a Garmin GPS then it's worth the effort to learn BaseCamp, if not then DeLorme Street Atlas is the one to learn. I use both but as I learn how to do what I want in BaseCamp I use DeLorme less and less. The best part of BaseCamp is that the maps are updated about 4 times a year (if your Garmin GPS has Lifetime maps) and it's FREE.

We've used Delorme for over 20 years. No internet needed.
