Well I went to a Koodo kiosk today and a great guy named Scoot showed me how to turn my phone into a secure wifi hotspot. I have a very reasonable monthly plan that I would lose and not get back if I upgraded to a data plan for a month. The solution is to use data as needed. Cost is up to 3gig for $30. He put a warning on my phone to ensure that I don't go over. I only intend to use this if I need a secure hotspot or campground wifi is unuseable. Only checking email basically. Thanks Scott at the Koodo kiosk in Lambton Mall Sarnia Ontario.
portliz, It could have been only available in Quebec. Did you look at the "new plans" found at the very bottom of the web page for current customers. We just got it last month. Before that we paid $45 for unlimited call & 1Gig data
I had good luck with Internet on the go in the US. Always had wifi. They have changed the rules and my hotspot is now 5 years old and won't update without a hassle when we go south. Will be looking for options for down south wifi when we head down this year
We always feel better when heading south for the winter than travling here in Canada. We used Verizon's Jet Pack, the second gadget we've had from them, and are always amazed that we never seem to be out of cell tower range, which allows the wifi to work.
Go on the Koodoo's site. They have some better plans if your phone is paid offf or unlocked. You need to go to the bottom of the page under new plans to find them We have unlimited phone and 2 Gig of data for less then $40. The extra data is less then we paid before
Looks like Telus charges $50 per GB over the plan. They do have a warning though. http://bestbuy.comparecellular.com/telus/rateplans-details.asp?l=&RatePlanID=7518&RID=18&CID=657
