Nevada Hyway 359 from Hawthorne, NV to I-395

Has anyone driven an RV from Hawthorne, NV to I-395 via Nevada SR 359? Is, what kind of road is it. I will be driving a 36 DP and trailing a toad. Thanks
  • Thanks to all, good info. Talked to the Nevada Dept of Hyways and they confirm it is a good road. California Dept. of Hyways no help.

Google 'California Highway Conditions' and enter the route number you are interested in. There website has lots of good information about weather closures, construction, even in some locations live video cams. Of course, you are asking about a Nevada highway, not a California highway. In California it is SR 167 between US 395 and the state line.

  • 359 is an easy drive and Hwy 395 is one of our absolute favorites - very RV-friendly. We've driven it from far south California to Pendleton, Oregon.
  • Nice drive. They stop traffic at a safe distance while old ordnance is burned up. Doesn't happen every day.

As you've been told there is little or nothing there, long desert road. It is however, beautiful high desert and there to see. Highway 395 is, however, not an interstate and there is at least one 7% grade and if you are headed south it will be a downhill. Just follow typical mountain driving practices. Not a biggy but just to let you know.

Just before you get to Mono Lake is the northern end of the Adobe Valley Wild Horse Herd comprised of about 250 horses.. Actually part of a Nevada herd but named for that valley. North of Mono lake is Conway Grade and it has been reworked and is much longer than it was in order to reduce the grade but still over 6% in one spot. From the summit is a beautiful vies of Mono Lake and points south. Mono Lake is also a beautiful thing to see. Further north is the road to Bodie St Pk. Paved and easy but lacks parking at the end and no camping. Bodie is a beautifully maintained ghost town. The park service has messed with some of the historical things there but it is worth the drive in your towed.

And of course to the south on the other side of the lake and just south of Lee Vining is CA 120 to Yosemite. That is steep but we do it both ways with the Bounder.

If you want anymore info on the area Pm me and I'll post it here.

You will find very little traffic.
