New Orleans to Houston

Traveled I10 from New Orleans to Houston many years ago. It was a rough washboard, cantilevered road that wore you out. Has it been improved over the years or should I avoid it?
Also, any suggestions for camp grounds near New Orleans in late May?
Thanks
  • Just went through there and found it pretty bad but mainly in Louisiana. Seems their highways haven't been maintained since they were originally put in decades ago. Of all our recent 4,000 miles traveled Louisiana and New Orleans were some of if not the worst roads traveled.
  • You probably already know this, but if at all possible, get off the interstate in that area and visit the small towns for a few days. The food and the music are out of this world. New Iberia, Breaux Bridge, Lafayette. Both Cajun and Zydeco music. (They are not the same thing at all!!)
  • ^^^what he says X2. You can make decent time on 190 and 12 in Texas. I think Louisiana raised the speed limit between Kinder and the Texas line. Used be a slooow 55mph. 12 was 70mph but has been lowered to 60 or 65 a while back in Vidor, I think.
  • Heading west, I have started taking US190 from the west bank of the Mississippi River right after Baton Rouge & then LA12 at Ragley on into Texas to avoid the construction on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge and the rough interstate at Sulphur just west of Lake Charles. You can jump over to US190 using LA415 right after Port Allen. LA12 connects to TX12 at the state line and rejoins I10 in Vidor, TX avoiding some construction on I10 in Orange, TX. You will not always be traveling at interstate speeds, but you will avoid rough roads, construction, stress and perhaps unanticipated delays. If you choose to go US90 from New Orleans to Lafayette, you can just continue on I49 on north and connect with US190 in Opelousas, LA.
  • There are a number of campgrounds and state parks in and around New Orleans. It depends on what kind of facility you prefer. As far as route from New Orleans; if from metro New Orleans area, US90 to I-10 at Lafayette is a viable alternative. West bound thru Baton Rouge is not that bad on weekends. There are construction areas on I-10 between the basin bridge and Lafayette but 2 lanes each way are being maintained. There is a rough section west of Lake Charles.
  • Can't cross ferry with anything but a car or pickup due to high water in river. Also any higher and no ferry crossing at all. The bridge in BR is a parking lot all times of the day.
  • Most of 10 is in pretty decent shape. Some of it really good. Between Lafayette and Breaux Bridge it’s ****. You can go 190 between Lafayette and Baton Rouge but the road is not too good in several places, but it does bypass the I10 bridge that usually has at least one wreck on it after 3:00. Most of the backup is between hwy. 415 headed east until you make it past the 10-12 split. It sucks but there just aren’t many options.
If you’re feeling like sight seeing and have time you can go south on hwy 1 to Plaquemine and take the ferry across to the east bank; it’s kind of fun.

Oops, I got mixed up. Gave suggestions for Houston to New Orleans. One route I like is crossing the river on 310 at LaPlace and paralleling 10 using 3125(?) to intersect with 10 at Port Allen.
You can still possibly avoid delays by getting through BR before 3. The ferry is still an option you’d just have to approach it from River Road in BR to Plaquemine. I’m sure your god could handle it. The main thing is the bridge. AM 1150 gives pretty good traffic reports.
