Hello Everyone

We are making a trip this summer from Windsor Ontario to Newfoundland. Just looking for some ideas on places to stay for the trip. This will be the first trip out east with the big rig.

Looking or any ideas anyone has.
Thanks
Dave

The ferry to Labrador was just a couple of hours. it would have been a nice trip if it hadn't been cold and rainy.
One note of caution. We went on the ferry as Stand By, with no reservation, which wasn't a problem but when we tried to book the return trip online we discovered that a truck as big as ours is automatically classified as Commercial and the number of commercial trucks is limited on each crossing. all commercial spots were booked for 4 DAYS!
Hubby did some fast talking, had to show our receipt that said we werent designated Commerical on the original trip. They did let us go, but we almost got stuck there for days!

You don't say how long your trip will be but if you have the time to take the 'scenic route' through NY, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine by all means, DO IT.

The scenery is well worth the extra bit of travel time, even if all you do is drive through.

http://www.roads.gov.nl.ca/cameras/ has scads of links, including various ferry services.

Memorize it so you can go there no matter where you are or on what camera.

:C
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

hahaha, I know which "France" you meant....that is so funny!
We contemplated going there without rv but rooms are pricey and I wasn't impressed enough with reviews I read...would be interesting though...perhaps some other time.

Ferry to Labrador is cheap ($24 I think for us one way) and maybe 2 hours). If you are up in the northern peninsula you should go at least for the day or increase their economy and stay a night. A note on ferry...don't book but get there early before it opens and get out of vehicle and wait in line if others are gathering. We got on because of this and some did not. PLEASE if you see wildlife, do not feed them. I was in line waiting for ferry and a Labradorian was telling someone how they saw a bear and fed it...I cringed at the thought of them making a dangerous bear out of one that is scared of humans.

There is the viking rv park in quirpon in the northern peninsula which we stayed at (passport america at the time). Quite honestly we boondock mostly during our trip with some campgrounds thrown in when we needed them...so not sure about Labrador but you can find a place to overnight easily.

If you are up in Northern Peninsula, we ate twice at The Daily Catch in St. Lunaire-Griquet, NL. It was very tasty. It was not deep fried everything...real food.

If you have time go to FOGO island. Eat at Nicole's. Excellent food..not from freezer to fryer. Some nice hikes and explore the working artists buildings.

Newfoundland/Labrador is the first time I've seen "CLOUDS" of eating bugs (mosquitos?) so be prepared for that or be where its windy. This was one of the reasons we weren't inclined to overstay our welcome...

Hi dcason - the "France" I mention are the two islands right off the coast - St Pierre and Miquelon! Not all the way across the puddle! Tough drive, too...!

Soos - how long a boatride is the ferry to Labrador? Pricey? Looking to do something similar as you! We have a 'B' - any CG's right around there? Thx!

When taking the Newfoundland ferry on the Nova Scotia side there is an RV park about 5minutes from the terminal called the arm of gold. Big rig freindly and over looks the water. Many people use this as their resting point before they board, flush, charge and load so to speak. Very clean park.

Loggenrock, if you are planning a month, I would leave out France. The distances are great. We spent 26 days in Newfoundland (plus a few in Nova Scotia/getting there and some in Labrador) and the 26 in Newfoundland wasn't nearly enough...adding France would surely be too much.

After a few days of driving, driving, driving (from NY), I was just tired of all the driving. I needed to be doing so we cut some out just so there was plenty of time to hike, walk....much better.

This time we will have two months and spend maybe two weeks going around Nova Scotia and no Labrador. We would do Labrador again when they get the road all paved (even if quebec part is not).

We took just the truck over on the ferry to Labrador and spent the night in a hotel. Now we can say we've been there. Scenery was great, as was the museum in Red Bay.

Add us to the list for 2015!
In addition to Newfoundland, how have folks done day trips to Labrador and also France (St Pierre)?
We should have about a month there to play (not including travel to and from).
Any input appreciated! ST

We went in 2013 for the once in a lifetime trip...or so we thought. We are going again for two months in 2015.

I will address the "not driving all the time issue". I was so there...moving, moving, moving because it is a big land. We ended up cutting out peninsulas because we both knew we would be coming back. This time we are slowing it down a bit. We use our 24 foot class C/no toad as a roaming hotel...doing what we wish during the day and landing somewhere for the night to just get some shuteye. Our first choice for night stays is always scenic but when that is not available we are open to anything.

Highly recommend:
Sandbanks Provincial Park...lots of places to walk, laundry, dump station, no electric at sites though.
Go visit labrador for the day or do the gravel road (which is probably by now much more paved...just make sure your rig is in good shape. Hubby just put new shocks in...
Much more, you cannot go wrong just about anywhere.

We we went in early June. During that time we saw plenty of icebergs but no whales. We wanted to see both but the rest of the trip made up for that. If you are military or retired military there are discounts for you and a number of passengers on the ferry (passengers only - not the RV)

Thanks for all the replies.
We are looking forward to this trip and trying to set it up so we are not just driving all the time.
I was doing some searching and found this site www.campscout.com
It looks like a lot of listings and information also.
Thanks again

Dave

We have been there twice, most recently in May 2014. The province has an excellent travel guide that you should order. We took the short ferry and when you arrive the Grand Codroy RV park is a great place to start (and finish) your vacation. There are many festivals in the summer and don't miss the boat ride in Gros Morne National Park. You have to walk about 3K to get to the boat but it is worth it. Newfoundland is very RV friendly and many towns have municipal campgrounds which are inexpensive and scenic.

I can't recommend the Grand Codroy campground highly enough. If it was in Nova Scotia we would be there every weekend.
